Interview with William Faulkner collection The Paris Review Interviews Vol 2 is probably Interview.
Nobody has ever managed to live up to its dream of perfection, so my view is based on our splendid failure to create the impossible. I am convinced that if I could write about my new works to improve, and this, for an artist, is ever the situation more positive. That's because the artist never stops working, try and try, whenever he believes to be that good, that will do it. It 'obvious that will not make it, and that's why the picture is positive. If you succeed in doing, if he could really bring the work up to the image, the dream had nothing left to cut his own throat, throw yourself down from that pinnacle of perfection, to suicide. I am a failed poet. Maybe every novelist goes through an initial moment in which he wants to write poetry, then discovers that it is not able to do so, and then test with stories, poetry is that after the race more challenging. And only then, after failing in that, he began to write novels.
