Vegetable oil and gas microturbine systems: evidence of successful dialogue. E 'born in the province of Treviso in the world the first trial of a plant micro gas turbines to produce electricity cogeneration - ie electricity and heat in a combined way - powered by pure vegetable oil. For example, corn oil, sunflower oil or rapeseed oil. An application that combines renewable energy and technological innovation.
The company that produced the first unit into operation in a few weeks is the IBT Group Villorba (Treviso). The company, launched in 2000 by Hilary Vigani, now has an annual turnover of 6 million and a total of 16 employees. In the past ten years IBT, the exclusive partner for Italy of the American Capstone Turbine Corporation, specializes in growing self-energy systems and has combined the technology of micro gas turbines use of pure vegetable oil. The machine is the result of a research project supported by the Region of Tuscany and carried out in collaboration with Spike Renewables, start-up of the University of Florence.
The advantages of this application, the small size of the plant, the low atmospheric emissions and lower maintenance requirements than larger plants. The plant has a capacity of between 35 and 60 kW with a consumption of 11 liters of oil per hour, for an electrical efficiency of 27%. The only element of concern can be represented by the cost of the plant, which is around 100 thousand euro, 10-15% more than traditional systems. The gain is counted in terms of clean energy and lower emissions, regardless of the incentives, 28 € / kwh under the Law 99/2009 and subsequent ministerial circulars.
"With this type of machines that we can reduce consumption and energy that often is wasted because of the large size of the facilities - explains the owner of IBT Group Ilario Vigani -. Due to their small size, all the energy produced is used to produce heat. Emissions are even 100 times lower than conventional systems. Our technology uses a special, aeronautical, a gas-powered microturbine natural oil. For all these features, we imagine that they can well adapt to the needs of small-scale agricultural situations, cottages, farms and local producers, greenhouses, farms and all the floral and nursery industry. "
material hosted the first operating system, after an initial prototype, the Tuscan spa Silo, leader in Italy in the production of alternative raw materials for production of biofuels and pure vegetable oils for industrial use.
In these first weeks of operation the machine is constantly monitored in order to understand the answer according to the type of vegetable oil which is supplied.
